Reflection #3Since the last time we wrote, I learned that social media is another one of the systems that affects humanitarian assistance. For example, if celebrities are telling everyone about a current famine or crisis going on, people will react and help the problem. This was seen when celebrities created the hashtag #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia to try to get Turkish Airlines to send volunteers and supplies to Somalia. I learned that I am very well working with others and that I can cooperate greatly. Our creative piece is going to be an paper mache globe in the shape of a bowl. It is going to be empty to show how no one helps. Moreover, we will make the U.S a spoon and the UN the knife. To successfully complete the next component, we will need to memorize what we will say and also make our creative piece look good.
Driving QuestionWhich Systems contribute to the amount of humanitarian assistance a country receives in regard to famine?
Reflection #2So far, we found an extra article written by the UN Africa Renewal category. It will be put in our ISD because it maintains relevancy even though it was written in 2006. Moreover, we managed to get an interview with McGill’s Associate Professor Khalid Mustafa Medani. He has yet to respond, but he said he would be delighted to answer our questions. A new discovery in our topic was that many times respond wasn’t given until deaths began to tally up or if the area was safe in regard to terrorism. What has been easy so far was finding articles about the topic since our topic is quite current and there are developing stories on these new famine. Since the last time we wrote about our topic we found our driving question which was, What systems contribute to the amount of humanitarian assistance a country receives in regard to famine? Our collaboration has been great so far and we have been able to communicate well. We have developed somewhat a plan for our board because we talked to Ms.Peat and she approved. Our plan is to put sand around the board to represent the desert and our artistic piece will be a world cut in half as a bowl. The Earth will be torn and cut.
Reflection #1In the exploration of our topic, we changed our main topic once and our generalizations. Our main topic used to be immigrant marginalization but we changed it because it was a very common topic and was very general as well. Moreover, we decided to change our generalizations because not all of them could fit well into our topic. Our new topic is how certain crises and events have been ignored based on ties to government, economy of area, and the races that inhabit the area. We have found many examples of crises that have been ignored and we also hope to find examples of how certain events have been prioritized above others. Our collaboration has been going great lately and we have been able to help each other out many times. What is working well is that we have found many examples of crises and the attention received by the media. However, not all sources have been credible and many have been untrustworthy or written by uncredible authors. Something new we learned while working was that there are many wars in the Middle East that have not been paid attention to. Also, we found out that Western Africa is going through famines and droughts. One article we have found so far was by the Huffington Post and it talked about how the famine in Yemen and west africa is being ignored and is just getting worse. It states that in West Africa there is 1.4 million people in danger of starving and that it will progressively get worse if it remains untreated.
